Kate Steinhacker, DVM

Dr. Kate was born in Middletown, CT and spent the first six years of her life in Higganum, CT and spending summers in Washington County, Maine, near Princeton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princeton,_Maine
Her family then moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming for seven years, http://www.jacksonhole.com returning to the East coast in 1984. Dr. Kate and her family lived in Eastport, Round Pond, and eventually Bailey Island, Maine, where Dr. Kate graduated high school (Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham). Dr. Kate then went on to college at Columbia University (Columbia College), where she studied History and Russian language. http://www.columbia.edu It was in New York City that Dr. Kate first began her house call career, working as a Russian language tutor in Manhattan and Jersey City. After graduating college with honors in History, it seemed her only career option was law. Dr. Kate fastidiously applied herself to the necessary preparation for a career in law with the intent of working to abolish the practice of hunting animals for sport (or any other reason).

Developing second thoughts about a career in the law, she began volunteering with a local veterinarian once a week. Almost immediately, Dr. Kate knew that she wanted to become Dr. Kate. This required 2.5 years of additional undergraduate study in science and math, which Dr. Kate completed at USM in Portland, UNE in Biddeford, and UMO in Orono. In 1997 Dr. Kate moved to Madison, Wisconsin to establish residency in a state that has a veterinary school. In 1998, Dr. Kate began medical school at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison. http://www.vetmed.wisc.edu/home During veterinary school, Dr. Kate had the honor of working as a research assistant for neuroanatomist Dr. Mary Behan. http://www.vetmed.wisc.edu/people/behanm After graduation from veterinary school in 2002, Dr. Kate moved back to Maine and has been working in the state ever since. She has worked at several animal hospitals in the Southern Maine region.

Dr. Kate studied acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society in 2004, http://www.ivas.org and began her house call practice later the same year. Since 2005, she has been studying Chinese herbal medicine, TuiNa, and Traditional Chinese Medical nutritional therapy with Huisheng Xie, DVM PhD in Gainesville, Florida. http://www.tcvm.com She attends several scientific meetings each year to stay current on Western medical therapies. Dr. Kate also serves on the Executive Board of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association. http://www.mainevetmed.org In her free time, she enjoys oil painting, cycling, skiing, literature, and playing with her two felines: Puddles and Scoochie.
